What's New  » SCHIP Law Includes Major Tobacco Tax Increase

President Obama has signed the State Children's Health Insurance Program into law

This landmark piece of legislation includes a federal tax increase of 62 cents per pack of cigarettes.  The federal cigarette tax has thus been increased to $1.01 per pack, and the SCHIP law will include a tax increase on other tobacco products.

It is expected that the approval of this law will allow 4 million more children to be eligable for SCHIP, and the increased taxes are expected to generate $71.4 billion in revenues over a five year period.
